Sirius of the Week for Nov. 26 - Dec. 2, 2000
Chester is a mixed-breed dog, lab and greyhound (or at least some sort of
sight hound). He has very, very long legs which put his head well above
table and countertop reach. He is pretty much allowed only his dry regular
Science diet food since it is very easy for him to snatch food he shouldn't
have. He has a great fondness for anything peanut butter and
occasionally gets his chewing Kong filled with it.

Being a high-energy dog, he loves to fetch, take long daily walks/hikes and
chew, chew, chew. His favorite toys are large knotted rope chews,
rawhides,
a squeaky vinyl hedgehog, and tennis balls. He is completely and totally
joyful and within his ability tries to do what is asked of him. He enjoys
doing tricks--for treats of course. He does an interesting variation on
"rollover", putting 6-8 spins around on it first! His people don't know why he
started doing it this way, but have encouraged him to continue since it
burns off a little more energy. He is highly intelligent and always
responds correctly to such questions as, "What covers to top of the house?"
(WOOF!) or "What covers the outside of a tree?" (BARK!)
He shares his home with three cats and does his best to be their servant.
They are still in the process of adapting to each other. One of the cats
will stand on the basement stairs and allow Chester to massage her with his
tongue. Chester is afraid to go down the open stairs, so Mocha can make a quick
get-away if necessary.
This fall, Chester participated in a dog walk for the county animal shelter
which helps many homeless dogs and cats in our area. He helped to raise
money for the shelter by doing something he adores---walking! He had a
wonderful time meeting people and other dogs. He is also trying to be
helpful by setting a good example for other dogs and cats (and their
owners)
by being a neutered pet. His humans want to encourage all pet owners to
spay/neuter
their pets and to get involved with their local animal shelters.
