Sirius of the Week for December 11 - 17, 2005
This week our star is Festus, a red bone coon hound, who lives in New Mexico, and
shares his home with other animals and his border collie "siblings" Okapi and Tally
(featured November 13, 2005). His person mom writes,
"Festus is our funny man, and so full of love. He is 1 1/2 years old.
Festus likes to swing in our outdoor swing, chase rabbits, deer and
elk, and plays well with our pigs. When he was about 6 months, he took on a
bobcat that had come onto our property. After three fights, lots of scratches
and two torn ears, he brought down the bobcat. If he is close to a person, he
walks over and leans on them, looking for a pat on the head. Festus
has a beautiful voice (a deep, long bay), an excellent nose and is very fast.
We found him at about 8 weeks old 20 miles north of town on a dirt road -
starving, covered in pine sap and scared. After a trial, we found
Festus does best on Purina Pro Plan large breed puppy food. He gathered a pile
of hay on top of his dog bed inside our barn where he likes to sleep at night.
"We call Festus our funny man because his behavior shows his lack of
intelligence (especially when compared to the border collies) and he
has an eye condition that causes his eyes to slightly (and sometimes severly)
roll back. Thus, often when he's looking at us his nose points at us but
his eyes look behind him or to the side. Fortunately, he has many, many
good qualities."
