Sirius of the Week for December 5 - 11, 1999
Cocoa was 8 1/2 years old in the photo. He is a neutered black cocker spaniel
who was raised for 3 years in the basement of people who don't believe that
dogs should be inside the same house as people. The fourth year they had him,
they renovated their basement and he lived in a laundry room with a window
high up on the wall -- essentially solitary confinement. They walked him once a day for
about 20 minutes.
He had a lot of weird behavior when his current owners took him in, but has since become much
better with people and other animals. He adores his person-mom and likes his person-dad a great
deal. Actually he likes almost everyone. He adores being petted. He just eats
up any form of affection. He doesn't mind baths, but doesn't like swimming.
He's probably afraid, but one of these days when his current ownders find some real shallow
water that isn't too cold, they'll teach him not to be afraid of the water.
His real name is Coco Noir, which, it is believed, is like "Little Black Darlin'" --
loosely translated.
He likes the female mail carrier a lot. He sees the white mail truck pull up,
down the street, and goes into paroxisms of barking. When she arrives at the
door he is quiet long enough for her to drink the iced tea left out
for her (or hot tea in the winter) and he goes crazy again when she leaves.
