Sirius of the Week for Apr. 30 - May 6, 2000.
This week we have the second photo in our series of Terriers. Meet
Champion Gleanntan Getgoing, a 2 year old male Skye Terrier (with
prick ears). He has been showing for a year and he won Best of
Winners at the Columbia Terrier Association of Maryland's recent
show.
Pongo (as he is normally called) lives sometimes with his owner
and sometimes with his handler. When he is inside, he's a couch
potato. Outside, he loves to chase things.
Skye Terriers are normally rather laid back, but are energetic in
the ring. They are also very loyal to their people and never forget
a friend.
They were originally bred to hunt and kill vermin, especially fox
and badger. They are agile and strong, very sturdy and muscular.
Skye Terriers are about twice as long as they are tall (they stand
between 9 and 10 inches high at the shoulders and approximately 20
inches from the chest bone to the base of the tail). Their coats
have two layers -- a, short, soft undercoat, and an outer coat of
hard, straight hair, about 5 1/2 inches long. The coat can be
black, blue, dark or light grey, silver platinum, fawn or cream.
One reason their hair hangs down over their eyes was to protect
their eyes when they were used to hunt vermin.
