- The Maltese is an ancient breed, known in Mediterranean countries since the earliest times.
- Small statues of Maltese were found in the tomb of Ramses II, who ruled from 1290 to 1223 B.C.
- The breed became popular in Britain in the 1500s. perhaps earlier.
- A Maltese first appeared in a North American Dog Show in 1877.
- The Maltese is a little square dog with a well rounded head.
- They stand up tot 10 inches high at the withers and weight between 4 and 9 pounds.
- They have dark eyes, and a black nose, and their ears are flat (almost triangular) covered with long hair.
- Their coat is white with long, straight, silky hair that requires extensive grooming to keep in top condition.
- They can occassionally have slight lemon or beige markings.
- Despite their small size, they are not weak dogs -- they love exercise.
- They also enjoy attention and human company.
- Maltese are intelligent, affectionate, good natured, and hardy dogs.
